When editing your site, whether it is your website through Cushy or your e-commerce shopping cart through Miva, you may want to add in photos. Photos are a nice addition to your web pages and a great way to show off your products in your shopping cart. However, you may need to resize your photos – whether it is to have them fit on the page or to prevent lag on your web page. Miva has no image resizing - whatever the dimensions of the photo you post will remain the same. Cushy does allow you to change the dimensions when you upload it, HOWEVER, the original dimension still exist on the photo and could still slow down your web page as it tries to load a large file in.

Recommended sizes:

These are some recommendations for images. We only listed the widths as heights may vary picture to picture. YOUR DIMENSIONS SHOULD ALWAYS STAY PROPORTIONATE. All dimensions are in pixel measurements NOT inches.

Shopping cart (through MIVA)
Thumbnails: 100px – 300px
Full images: 500px – 800px

Website (through Cushy)*
Small: 100px – 300px
Medium: 300px – 450px
Large: 450px – 800px
Click for larger image- 800px – 1000px

Methods:

Here are some of the top ways to resize your photos.
  1. Paint Windows 7 and higher only
  2. Photoshop purchased program
  3. Pic Resize Free online photo resize
  4. PicMonkey Free online photo resize

Paint

You can only do this if you have a Windows 7 or higher OS on your computer. Paint is a simple art program that has come free on Windows machines for a long time. Windows 7 gave Paint a huge update giving it more features. One feature was image resizing. Follow the steps below to resize your image using Paint.
  1. Open up Paint from the Start Menu
  2. Click the File Drop down button
  3. Click Open and open up your photo
  4. Make sure the Home tab is clicked, go to the Image section and click Resize

  5. Make sure Pixel is selected. Enter in your width into Horizontal. MAKE SURE "Maintain Aspect Ratio" IS CHECKED- this will automatically give you’re your proportionate height.

  6. Click Ok and save your image (Save to save over it, or Save As to save it as a new file)
  7. Recommended file format to save in: JPG/JPEG, PNG, GIF (gifs are low resolution, JPEGs are much more recommended)

Photoshop

Photoshop If you have Photoshop on your computer (purchased through Adobe for MAC or PC) then you can easily resize images. Photoshop is an art and editing from Adobe. All versions of Photoshop have image resizing. There are other Adobe programs that allow you resize images. Check out Adobe to see if there is a solution for you.
  1. Open up Photoshop from your Start menu
  2. Go to File > Open and open up your photo
  3. Click Image > Image Size...
  4. Change the Width under Pixel Dimensions. You will notice that the Document Dimensions change anyway as you adjust the width in Pixel Dimensions.
  5. MAKE SURE Scale Styles and Constrain Proportions ARE CHECKED!

  6. Click Ok and save your image. Go to File > Save for Web & Devices.
  7. Use one of these settings. The picture shows the example for JPEGs
    • JPEG: Quality- Very High or High
    • PNG-24: Make sure "Transparent" is checked especially if you have transparency in the image
    • GIF: Preset- GIF 128 Dithered

Pic Resize

Don’t have Photoshop and not planning to purchase it? Have a Windows XP machine or lower so Paint is not an option? Or perhaps you would like something easier? Pic Resize is a FREE online image resizer that does not require you to download it.
  1. Go to www.picresize.com
  2. Click Browse and find the photo you want to resize. Then click Continue
  3. Go down to Section 2: Resize Your Picture
  4. Click the drop down where it says "Make my Picture" and choose Custom Size...
  5. Make sure the drop down next to Width is Pixels and input your Width. Leave Height empty.

  6. Go down to Section 4: Save As
  7. Recommended image formats: JPG (Quality: Better), PNG, GIF
  8. Click I’m done! Resize my Picture!
  9. Click the Save to Disk button to save your new resized image. (You only have 20 minutes to save it, Pic Resize does not store resized photos)

PicMonkey

Looking for something simple like Pic Resize but looking to edit your image further? Try out PicMonkey. This gives you an array of features to edit your image all while being free (advance editing requires a pay account, however basic and many features are free and require no account).
